What does a electric distribution engineer and utility mechanic do?

The Electric Distribution Engineering Technology (EDET) Certificate of Applied Science and Utility Mechanic Advanced Skills Set Certificate prepares individuals for the fast track into high paying careers. The program is designed to provide the technical skills that are applicable to a wide variety of career opportunities within organizations such as electric, cable and telephone companies, construction, subcontractors, railroad, municipalities, and the oil and gas industry. Applicants must have a strong work ethic, good communication skills, and the ability to pass a physical examination including drug screening. This 900 clock hour (30 credit hour) program combine’s academic instruction on the technology fueling today’s electrical utilities with hands-on laboratories such as pole training areas and equipment labs to ensure the students are prepared for the job on day one. Curriculum

Within the completion of the certificate of applied science degree, students have the opportunity to obtain additional skill sets and/or certificates in the following areas:

  • 900 Hour Line Service Mechanic Completion Certificate
  • Aerial Lift Rescue
  • CDL
  • D-100, D-200, D-300
  • First Aid and CPR
  • Fork Lift certificate
  • Ladder Safety
  • OSHA 10
  • Pole Climbing (3 levels)
  • Pole Top Rescue
  • WV Traffic Control Certificate

Upon completion of the EDET program, the successful student will be able to:

• Explain the proper use of safety equipment and safe practices associated with the special hazards of powerline work.
• Demonstrate how to safely inspect and climb utility structures.
• Explain how electric power is distributed from generation to customers.
• Demonstrate appropriate driving and setup operations and emergency procedures associated with using digger, derricks, bucket trucks, trenching equipment, backhoe/loaders and drilling equipment.
• Store, load, transport and install wooden utility poles.
• Safely install equipment ion the utility pole including cross-arms, transformers and conductors.
• Explain how to effectively test and troubleshoot electrical circuits.
• Explain how to select and use rigging equipment.
• Describe grounding, bonding and how to calculate Voltage, current and resistance values in series, parallel and combination DC circuits using Ohm’s law.

Job and salary outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of electrical power-line installers and repairers will continue to be in demand. The median annual salary of electrical power-line installers and repairers was $65,500 in 2016. The median annual salary of telecommunications line installers and repairers was 64,900 in 2016. Student Success Stories

Matt Bennett: After receiving his degree from Concord University in Biology/Pre Med., Matt Bennett found himself unsatisfied with his job opportunities and wanted to find a career in which he could be outdoors and make a high wage. He then began his pursuit of the Electric Distribution Engineering Technology (EDET) Certificate of Applied Science and graduated in May 2014. Matt currently works as an Apprentice Lineman for Davis H. Elliot Company, Inc. and is loving it. He contributes his academic success to the outstanding EDET instructors. “The knowledge and experience that Mike and James bring to the program is so important. It is easy to see the passion and dedication that the instructors have in the material they teach and for the overall learning of the student. The contacts that they have established in the industry increases the likelihood of getting students jobs.” Matt hopes to continue working in the industry and one day come back to teach in the field.

A 50/50 payment plan for the first summer term is available for self-paying students- 50% of your balance will be due by May 11, 2017 and the remaining 50% will be due on June 2, 2017 for the five-week term and June 23, 2017 for the ten-week term.
