The Office of Communications serves as the official coordinating department for all communications of the College. At the direction of the President, the Chief Communications Officer, or designee, serves as the official spokesperson for the College.
The Communications staff manage all external communications including media relations; advertising (except legal or job vacancy advertising); promotion of special events; development of publications including the Annual Report, Current Newsletter and brochures; signage; the College website and the presence of any New River CTC entity on a social media platform. The Office also manages internal communications including the From the Hawks Nest newsletter for faculty and staff.
To tell New River CTC's story effectively in order to advance all facets of the College, while defining and protecting New River CTC's brand.
- Support the accreditation process.
- Lead the infrastructure to support the development and strengthening of the online processes.
- Research and evaluate social media trends to expand New River's exposure, i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.
- Refocus marketing to attract and retain students.
- Cultivate strong internal and external relationships for the College and further refine internal communications.
- Ensure community awareness of the College and its new facilities.

Tips from the Office of Communications
There are two approved vendors for the College. Chapman Printing in Charleston prints business cards, envelopes, forms, letterhead, name tags, etc. Central Printing from Beckley is our printer for color work such as the Current, Annual Report, and four-color brochures. If you need to order printed items, please contact the Communications Office.
Use of the New River Logo and Name
The acceptable names for the College are New River Community and Technical College or New River CTC. The abbreviation NRCTC is not acceptable.
Guidelines for the appropriate use of the New River CTC logo can be found in the Graphic Standards Manual.
Please note that it is not appropriate to use the logo with a white box in the background. If you will be using the logo against a dark backdrop, please email the Office of Communications for a single color logo with a transparent background or if you have questions about logo usage.
Flyers and Brochures
The Office of Communications provides templates in Microsoft Publisher that should be used to create flyers promoting College events (with the exception of SGA and other student activities). The purpose of these templates is to assure that all flyers are consistent in reflecting the New River CTC brand. Flyers should be sent to the Office of Communicatons for review before they are posted. Templates are available above.
Anyone wishing to create a brochure should work with the Office of Communications for assistance in copywriting and design. Do not create brochures in Publisher and print them internally. Our goal is to maintain a very high professional standard in the appearance of College publications, and striving to achieve a consistent look and feel in our printed materials. We can assist in developing a very attractive brochure. We have access to professional graphic designers externally and in-house.
When designing a flyer, please keep the following pointers in mind:
- Do not use more than one or two fonts. Arial and Times New Roman are the College's designated fonts. Don't use italics or all caps unless there is a compelling reason to do so.
- Do not use more than one or two graphics or photos. A simple, clean design is more attractive and likely to be noticed.
- Use colors that blend with the template design. Avoid using red for text. It is the hardest color to read.
- Don't just grab images off of the web. Make sure that any photos or images you use are not copyrighted.
- Avoid putting too much information on a flyer. The idea is to grab people's attention and get them to follow up, either by attending the event or calling for more information. Too much text makes the flyer too cluttered and people will not take the time to read it.
- Flyers should follow the same basic rule as a news release. Tell the reader WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN and WHY they should attend. Particularly since we have multiple locations and flyers may be posted on Facebook, be sure to identify the location of your event (campus and building/room number).
- If you are e-mailing the flyer to others to print, remember that they may not be able to print in color. Try printing it in black and white to make sure that your flyer looks good in both formats before sending it out.

Image Fair Use and Copyright
With a simple google search, you can find thousands of images that represent any subject. But just because you find an image that you like, does not mean it is free to use. Most images are copyrighted and it is not legal for you to reproduce or use them without the copyright holder's permission. The safest bet, is to take a photo yourself. If that is not an option, there are services that provide copyright free images.
You are encouraged to send information about events on your campus to the Office of Communications. We'd love to receive announcements of upcoming events, photos and follow-up information after events occur.
Faculty, staff and students must file an application (located in the Social Media procedure) and obtain approval from the Office of Communications before opening a social media account for a College entity.
The Web Developer has overall responsibility for the content on the website, but there are multiple Content Managers responsible for information on different portions of the site. If you would like individual assistance in getting pages updated, contact the Office of Communications to schedule a time.
If you become aware of inaccurate or outdated information on the site, please bring it to the Office of Communication's attention so that it can be corrected. Also information posted on the myNewRiver portal page, so if there is information that needs to be communicated, please let us know.
Publicity and Advertising
The Office of Communications is the only department authorized to send information to the news media or to place advertisements (other than employment ads or bid announcements) in print or broadcast media.
If you would like assistance in promoting a program, class or event on your campus, the Communication's Office can assist with either publicity or advertising. Publicity involves preparing a news release and/or public service announcement, which is sent to the newspapers and/or radio and they run it free of charge (although whether they print it or not is up to them). The newspapers in our market are very good about running our news releases, but there is no guarantee.
