The mission of the Office of Career Services at New River Community and Technical College is to empower students/alumni to identify and actualize their career goals. In partnership with staff, faculty and employers, Career Services facilitates the career development process by providing career advising/counseling, career information, employment services, further educational planning and experiential education.

The Distance Education Advisory Committee is appointed by the President and charged to advise the Vice President for Technology Services regarding periodic review of New River's online and distance education programs to ensure that quality standards are established and met. The committee also provides advice and recommendations to the Vice President for Technology Services regarding continuous improvement of New River's distance education program and online student services to better meet the needs of students, businesses, and the community. The committee participates in annual updates to the technology plan and ensures that appropriate strategic objectives are addressed by way of establishing priorities and providing the services and equipment that are needed for the delivery of New River's rapidly growing distance education program. Voting members serve a two-year stint on this committee and replacement members will be nominated by the committee and appointed by the President.

The Occupational Therapy Assistant program is an intensive 5 semester program designed to provide the student with the technical education required to sit for the National Occupational Therapy Assistant Certification Examination. Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTA) work under the direction and supervision of an occupational therapist. Duties of an occupational therapy assistant include instructing patients in exercises and activities of daily living; administering therapeutic modalities, utilization of assistive equipment, and other patient care procedures; communicating with patients, families, caregivers, physicians, and other health care workers; and documenting the patients’ status. Licensed occupational therapy assistants find employment opportunities in such settings as hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies, rehabilitation centers, school systems, mental health facilities, and private practices. Persons with a felony conviction are eligible for licensure based on terms and conditions of the state in which they intend to apply.

Program Application and Admission
The occupational therapy assistant program is selected enrollment, meaning that students must apply to and be accepted before enrolling in any course with an OTHA prefix. Acceptance to New River and meeting the program application requirements do not guarantee admission. Potential students will undergo an interview process and written essay to establish their rapport with staff and writing skills.
When applying to the program, students must have completed or be enrolled in the program’s 33 semester hours of prerequisites with all completed courses graded C or better and an overall GPA of 2.50 for all college-level work. All prerequisite courses must be completed by the end of the traditional fall semester to be considered for the entering of the spring class. The application process also includes submission of an OTA program application, documentation of at least 8 volunteer hours under the direction of a licensed occupational therapist or certified occupational therapy assistant. All program application materials are due to the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program and must be hand delivered or mailed and postmarked on or before October 31st of the prior year in which applying to the program. E-mailed or faxed information will not be considered for application into the program.
Students must take all courses with an OTHA prefix in sequence, with a minimum grade of C in all courses while maintaining a 2.50 GPA in program coursework. The program’s pass mark is 70 percent. The program includes a series of four academic fieldwork experiences. Students are required to work during the program to become a competent entry-level occupational therapy assistant. Expenses, including travel, food and housing are the responsibility of the student days and hours of operation of their assigned facility. The primary purpose of the clinical experiences is to ensure that each student gains the variety of experience required.
The program includes a series of two off-campus academic fieldwork experiences. Students are required to work during the days and hours of operation of their assigned facility. Every effort is made to place students in facilities that disrupt their domestic arrangements as little as possible, but the primary purpose of the academic fieldwork experiences is to ensure that each student gains the variety of experience required to become a competent entry-level occupational therapy assistant. Expenses, including travel, food, and housing (if necessary), are the responsibility of the student.

Once accreditation of the program has been obtained, its graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapy assistant administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). In addition, most states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure. Students must complete Level II fieldwork within 18 months following completion of the didactic portion of the program.

CONGRATULATIONS! You are ready to graduate from New River Community and Technical College. Your first step in the graduation process is to meet with your advisor and complete a Degree Certificate Evaluation sheet based on the year you entered New River.
Every student with a balance due must make a payment on their account by Friday August 8, 2014. Please note that the August 15 deadline given in some previous communications was incorrect. If you have questions, please contact the Business Office on your campus.
